does the surface it's being used on have any effect?? i've been doing it on ceramic tile floor. i believe that the ceramic tile might give you trouble. ceramic is a great insulator. might not be allowing the alcohol to reach the vaporisation temp in the early stages of the burn. i've got several fancy feest copies kicking around here that have screen for a potstand. they work fine. i doubt the gaps you describe are causing you any problems.
