Well, carbon nanotubes are supposed to be super efficient water filters. I suppose it's possible.

It seems that the coke is going really slowly through the filter,

It could be that the fan is cooling itself with the air it is moving, compensating for the radiant heat. It might melt if it was off when the fire was going hot.

I've used two types of battery fans, the cheap ones and the coleman "cool zephyr" ones. They both do the job, the cheap one is cheap, and the coleman one has a light and a magnet to secure it to the tent. It's nice cause you can hang it wherever you want on the tent body.
