Windows XP already has a startup program called MSConfig. Microsoft removed it for some strange reason with Windows 2000 but it's also in Windows 98.
Go to Start
-> type msconfig
and hit the OK
button to access it. Go to the Startup
tab to shut off programs that start when your computer boots.
To further control what's running on your computer use the Services panel (I think this is only in Windows XP Pro).
Right click the task bar -> Select Properties
-> Click the Start Menu
tab -> Click Customize
-> Click the Advanced
tab -> Scroll to System Administrative Tools
and tick the box labeled Display on the All Programs Menu and Start Menu
Once you've done that you can go to Administrative Tools
in your Start Menu
and select Services
. You'll find a huge list of processes that run in the background of your computer but if you don't know what they do don't mess with them. You can right click the item and select Properties
to stop the service and then change the run setting from Automatic
. In theory Manual
will allow the service to run if it is requested by a program but otherwise it is not started when the computer starts. Disabled
will not allow the service to run ever.
For example, if you don't have a printer or any software that uses the printing service (Like Primo PDF) you can safely shut off the Print Spooler
