Re: dehydrated meals
Pig imu..or cook it on a spit..Luaus use banana leaves and ti leaves surrounding and over the meat the meat. The heat factor is rocks heated in the fire..then buried underground.. the leaves more or less steam the meat..but they do cook the meat for 12 hours or so...

Re: dehydrated meals
Thanks for the link RG. Kahlua Pig looks g-o-o-d. I like the in-the ground idea because I will most likely leave it to cook at least half if not all day until I come back to camp at night. Ill be hunting some next week so maybe Ill get a chance to put a hog 2 feet under

Re: dehydrated meals
From the link:
Other hogs may get a whiff of it cooking and want samples

Heheh, guarding the pitCook for the rest of the afternoon until done. Bring out a case of cheap beer to sustain your vigilance while guarding the pit.

Re: dehydrated meals
my hunting trip to the island has been postponed until the last weekend in november, but I get to instead go on a week long hike on the Foothills TRail in Ga and SC. I havent done it before but it looks really scenic. Parts of it will be on the bank of the Chatooga River (deliverance) and other portions will be where the cliff portions of "Last of the Mohicans" was filmed. There will be alot of time right next to rivers and I will be carrying fishing tackle for sure.
I am in a mad rush to get all my stuff ready and have been drying food for over a week now. I took Dimeotanes advice and have dried a nice batch of black beans. I have dried rotississie chicken, venison, olives, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, and for the first time I dried a large batch of venison spaghetti. I am not finished and I havent figured out how Im am going to combine things yet, but that is the fun part. I dont have much time and I still have several sewing tasks to do on my equipment before I go.
Any ideas would be great and Ill experiment with the ingredients. I have two large vidalia onions that I am about to chop and and I cant wait to see how they turn out. I am thinking of black bean chili with the venison.
Any body up in the northeast please be careful in this next week with the approaching freak storm.

Sounds like you're good to go. What is venison spaghetti?I have dried rotississie chicken, venison, olives, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, and for the first time I dried a large batch of venison spaghetti.
How many pounds of each you planning on taking for a 1 week adventure?
Watch your back in the Deliverance area

Gee! your're going to be in some nice scenic areas. Are the leaves still on the trees out there?

Re: dehydrated meals
Venison Spaghetti is just regular spaghetti sauce with venison as the meat. what is different for me is that I dried it all together, sauce, noodles and meat. It turned out well. I had to make a new tray out of alum. foil with holes to get enough air moving to thoroughly dry it though.
I hope the leaves are like they were last Oct. which for me was the first time I have seen them at that time of year.
I normally shoot for about 24oz per day for food.
I might take a little more day food this time because somehow I always come up a little short compared to my buddys 5lb bags of corn nuts. etc.
I am carrying a large shelter which kicks up the weight a little but there is plenty of room for my buddy and I, and all of our stuff, with a little room to spare for cooking if the weather is nasty. It actually has a shorter footprint than my spinnshelter. They call it the SL5 but those must be some tiny people.
RG, I love the sound of that banjukey. I would love to strap one of those tiny geetars on my pack for some bear serenading.
This is my full skin out list minus my reading glasses and a few other little things:

Re: dehydrated meals
I envisioned the venison spaghetti to be long 1/8" strips of vension jerky.
the strips would be marinated in spaghetti sauce until softened.

Nice breakdown of gear list. Interesting to see you use iodine tablets. I like your woodstove....works nice. This is my full skin out list minus my reading glasses and a few other little things:

Re: dehydrated meals
Venison Jerky is something I havent made yet but I really want to.
I have added a few more items to the sack of dried food. Keep in mind this is stuff that I found in the pantry/freezer. Its probably obvious.
artichoke hearts
edamame
brown rice
blueberries
red beans
now I need to make up some meals by combining the ingredients.
It would also be fun but more work at camp to carry all of the basic ingredients and combine them at mealtime into whatever combination you might be craving at the moment.
My list keeps changing as the weather does and I keep changing my mind about items, but that is the neat thing about Geargrams. You can fiddle and see what that does to your overall weight.
re: iodine water treatment, Its what we used in boy scouts many moons ago and I never made the switch to chlorine. It has always worked and I havent had any problems with either waterborne ailments or iodine issues and I like the taste a little better.
