Get Naked Barley In Asian Food Stores

I got to get some naked barley and try it out. I saw a youtube video recently where a guy used it in a vegetable soup. the veggies and other ingredients were parboiled with a popcan stove and then transfered into a Thermos container. Oops56 might remember the video, he made a comment on it. The video had a few times where a popup warned that DIY stoves are dangerous. I thought that was humorous because the guy was using a pop can stove.

Here is a general link to info on barley and you'll see the term "naked Barley" used. Also you will see precooked, dried and rolled barley that is what I'm interested in for freezer bag meals. I like the taste of barley soup.

Ill bet that would be good. I cant remember if Ive ever barley soup. Do you make a vegetable soup w/ meat type base for it?

I had to look up pinole and found it to be Pine Nut. I picked some of those right off the trees one time when I was out west where the Pinion Pine grows. Really good tasting nut.

I've used meat sustitute in barley soup. It was made of wheat gluten. The wheat gluten was extracted from whole wheat via the swirling water method in my kitchen. The gluten separates into a soft ball mass. It can be flavored with ham base that works well. Pieces of it are laid onto a drying rack etc. Gluten is sold online. Great source of protene

man. blueberries, peanut butter, I need to broaden my food horizons..It sounds strangely good though. I need two thermos' like him. One for food and one for coffee. :D

I picked up a nice widemouth "Thermos" stainless steel 6 cup capacity at the thrift store for 2.99 in great condition. I will experiment. it will be for food only :o

I need to look for the naked barley today.

Blackeyed peas and stewed tomatos for good luck is new to me. It must be a thing of the south. I was raised on the belief that pork and kraut brought good luck for the new year. I wonder where these ideas originated :?:

Hoppin' John is a rice and black-eyed peas southern dish, eaten on New Years Eve for good luck.

I had someone make some for me. It was very good.

It's about that time of year, right now.

I was told the idea is along the lines of "eat like a peasant - live like a king" by avoiding diseases related to gluttony and excess.

Many cultures have a "holiday" traditional meal that is "peasant food" or "country food".

I've been experimenting but not documenting. :oops:

I made barley, bean and bacon soup today. It tastes too good :o

The instructions on the package says to add barley to large amount of water, bring to a boil and cook for 30 to 45 min. Shut it of, rinse in cold water, use as needed.

My thoughts are to use a slow burning stove like the Green Machine. Put barley into pot of cold water, bring to boil and cook at roling boil for desired time for desired texture of barley. I have to do timed tests to let you know times for my liking of doneness. No simmering.

Calories for 1/4 cup barley = 125 25% of that is fiber.

My recipe

2 cups barley

8 cups water

2 cans condensed bean and bacon soup, 2 cans water added to it.

1 package real bacon bits.

Cook barley 30 min and then add bean and bacon soup, heat til hot, eat with vigor and contentment. 8-)
