It's a fire starting pot. Use kerosene as fuel. Probably has a pumice ball on the end of the rod to soak up the fuel. No kindling necessary so they say. RR is right about keeping it next to the hearth of the fireplace. Just light it and stick it under a pile of split wood. If the wood is on a grate it would be alot easier to light.
