What did I just make?

Postby stovenoob » Thu May 05, 2011 10:23 pm

I made it out of one of those cute little 251 ml Aluminum coke 'bottles' (~2/3s the diameter of regular can). Carbon felt surrounds the inside. There is a hole in the bottom for air to flow up into it that is plugged with a grommet to make it easier to squirt in the fuel without it dripping out.

2 cups of 72 degree H2O. 15 mL S-X-L. boil at 11:00, flame out at 12:00. Loosely lidded Titanium pot (digital temp probe keeping it from closing). Indoors.

Nice tight flame pattern that didn't overun the sides of the pot. First stove I've made that got a boil out 15 mL when the titanium pot was used. Is there a name for this type of design?

First one I've seen like yours. I'd call it a passive wick design with central air assist.

I like how the flame is more centered than at the outer rim of the can. Looks like the flame edge is at the inner edge of the carbon felt.

Wick stoves are usually efficient burning.

Nice choice of materials and a nice design. :D

Thanks for the kind comments! I made a bigger one as well out of two Venom can bottoms. Notices the bent in top to cover the edge of the felt. Bigger hole that you can't see in the picture and no grommet. In the flame picture you can see an awesome jet that shoots up from the air hole.

Same conditions, but 30ml of S-L-X. Boil at 5:00, flame out at 9:00. So the general design CAN do fast. Not sure why the baby one is so much slower than the reduced felt surface area would indicate. Likely air gap under stove, hole size, and vertical height of grommet all could contribute to simmering characteristics. I need to get an aluminum pot and start comparing apples to apples, but I think this general design genus has a very strong potential. The simplicity to make, easy to light, no bloom time, efficiency -- it makes me laugh at the time i spent playing around with jetted stoves. The little one especially with the tight pattern should do a great job with skinny Heiny pots. Maybe if I lift it up a little or pop out the grommet it's 11:00 time will drop down to 6:00 or so. Will see later.

I think I'll call mine 'donut stoves'. I did more experimenting tonight, removing the grommet, using a bigger hole. None of my runs were as good as the first. Best seemed to be sans grommet, but with flame out at 9:00 at 201 degrees. Still haven't found an Al pot, so still handicapping myself with the Ti for now.

Best part about the design? I can light it through the hole in the bottom easily with a match or lighter.

Get an aluminum pot and do some serious tests using the test results seen her in the forums as comparisons.

Close off the center hole and see if there is a difference in efficiency. Use only enough carbon felt to suspend 1/2 ounce of fuel. The more felt used, the longer the burn time.

I have not done much experimenting with the carbon stuff. My initial experiments were not satisfactory as a material that had wicking abilities, bringing fuel up to the top rim of a container.

It looks very similar to the Rodir stove

Same design principle. A quick Google will rustle up some more detailed pics and there are a couple of vids on YouTube.

You've made so many stoves it would take me forever to go through them all. Can you give me a clue?

The dual flame design goes back a long way. View this thread:
