Lamp Alcohol Stove

Postby zelph » Mon Apr 21, 2008 6:05 pm

I converted a few oil lamps into alcohol stoves. They have built in potstands. Have adjustable simmer knobs easily accessable.

Will boil 2cups water in 14 min. on 1/2 ounce of fuel. Slow efficient boil time. Last I heard slow was the way to go.

Upper wick section of stove screws securley to bottom fuel resevoir.

Has cotton wick similar to what has been used recently on some stoves. Just don't let the stove run out of fuel or else the wick will be consumed. Blow the flame out when boil is reached.

I'm making some attached stainless steel windscreens to fit onto the potstand. The windscreen will also be shiny and act as a reflector for when the stove is used as a lamp.

When Your not cooking, use it as a lamp. Just put in some iso 91 :)

So you just filled it as is with alcohol and fired it up? Cotton wick? Do you think some flat stove gasket will fit?

I just found a similar, smaller one at a thrift store a couple weeks ago and have been pondering what to make with it.

That's all I did. Your smaller one may want to bloom at certain places. Use only 1/2 ounce to test it carefully.

That's very cool zelph!
I have a bunch of antique glass lamps. The only metal ones I have are antique Diez railroad lamps.
Big Lots sells Chinese made oil lamps for about 3.00

Cheers!

I've looked at alot of the chinese ones at dollar stores etc. and they look leaky. The ones I used here are made well. There are many holes at the base of the wick adjustment assembly that allows air to pass up and around the wick. When covered with a glass chimney the holes provide needed air. The air comming up through those holes keeps the flame directed upward in a narrow formation. Chimney effect without a chimney. A small fringe benefit

Anyone tried this one lately? Looks like someone on a different channel did

I suppose if I put some HEET in it and fired it up it would look pretty cool. Some might say, Hey I've seen that somewhere before
