I had company in town this past weekend at the last minute, so no backpacking trip for me.

I did get to do a nice, solid hike though on Sunday.

I had planed to hike Fairchild Mountain. However, the impending clouds made me decide to hike to The Saddlehttp://www.thespiritoftherockies.net/sp ... eHike.html instead. At 16 or so miles R/T and almost 4000' elev gain, it made for a nice, solid day hike.

The views aren't too shabby!

That's a view to Lawn Lake.

The technical name for the trees I believe are "krummholz"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krummholz

A generic name for any sub-alpine pine tree.

As for the color..it was a REALLY grey day. :D

weather formed trees are quite common on exposed coastlines as well. a lot of (un-informed) paddlers call them banzai. they can be quite beautiful.
i paddled past a tiny island once that had a lone stunted cedar on it that looked like it had just plain grown sideways. i didn't get a pic cause i was paddling (solo) in about four foot seas. ;) no time for cameras!
