Windy Winter Wonderland

Postby Mags » Wed Jan 02, 2008 1:22 pm

A photo from about a month ago...

My favorite type of skiing is ski touring. Hiking in skis essentially. Where you ski all day and do rolling ups and downs. No surprise that many people who hike and backpack gravitate towards this type of skiing. It is more elegant than snowshoeing and is less adrenalin (and Disney like!) than alpine (resort) skiing.

Once in a while though, I do what is called Telemark skiing. Tele skiing means climbing up the the top of a large bowl so you can carve turns. I am not a very good technical skiier (another reason why I love ski touring!), and tend to have better-than-average cardio/endurance SO, tele skiing (lots of pausing on the uphills for most people, showing how bad I ski going down steeper slopes. ;) ), is not as alluring to me.

But, throw in great mountain scenery and fun people, and a good time is had by all.

This photo is from Butler Gulch up against the Continental Divide. MAN was it windy and cold. Still, makes for a good photo.

Looks like fun. I use to cross country ski when I was younger but failed to stay with it. I really did enjoy it though maybe I'll have to get back into it. The down hill thing never apealed to me. I always decided that if I wanted to go flying down a hill I would get a snowmobile, l  ol! Don't want to pull a Sonny Bono, Ouch!

AH! I need that kind of hat, then. ;)

TONY: Heh... I don't shave on weekends as well. Not sure if I am quite that hairy, though. ;)
