Yeah, I saw a clip on the news about it the other day. Some small town in northern Minnesota. I guess they shot the bear... which is kind of sad. Why couldn't they just knock it out with some tranquilizers and bring back out to the woods?

Well, I guess they tried to capture it and/or tranquilize it to no avail. I saw a picture in the news report with officers within 6 feet or so of the bear. Just how difficult is it to shoot a tranquilizer at a bear with a jug stuck on its head? Wouldn't that be akin to shooting fish in a barrel?

I would think that the condition of the bear was that of a wounded animal(of sorts) time was of the essence in resolving the situation of the bear in city limits. One injured child or adult would have been disasterous. Many bears are killed every year just for the sport of it.
One swat of it's powerful claw filled paw could have done some damage to somones flesh. Our civil service people are on the inadequate side when it comes to odd situations. I recently saw a video of an officer that was being chased by a dog. The officer was shown jumping up onto the top of his squad car :o

I know bears are hunted for sport every year but I also know that it's regulated to some extent. I can't help but feel that each one of these non-regulated events that occur, like the bear with the jar on its head, is a bad addition to it all. I'm also reminded of the reports in the 80's of birds and other animals that were getting tangled up in garbage, especially plastic 6-pack rings, that were dumped in the ocean.

Two years ago I saw a seagull that has it's head caught in a plastic grocery type bag. It was in a large shopping mall parking lot in one of the chicago suburbs. It was able to get into flight about 2 feet off the ground and struggle to stay fly maybe 50 feet or so. During it's flight there were other seagulls that were following it and when the disabled gull landed the other birds were very aggressive towards it. It's as if they thought it was about to die and were waiting for their next meal. Had to leave, never found out it's fate.

Maybe in the same year I saw a coyote following a mangy/sickly looking coyote in a very large cemetary. I observed from a distance with my binocs. The sickly one must have hade the "mange" It stopped frequently to take a dump. The healthy one would stand close by hunched as if it wanted to attack the sickley one. Had to vacate the cemetary, never found out what happend to them.
