I just remembered this today so I figured I'd post it.
Your feet may "grow" during a thru-hike of the AT. That second pair of shoes may need to be bigger than the first.

i have heard that but wasn't sure how true it has. it is something to think about though. i'll ask the doctor about that next time i have my shoulder checked out if i remember.

That's probably a pretty good idea. To be more specific, I should say that your feet may stretch, elongate or swell when walking large distances.
I found a link to a Google book result for the book Long-Distance Hiking: Lessons from the Appalachian Trail. The paragraph under the heading Change in Shoe Size goes into a little detail about the phenomenon.

Everytime I put my foot in my mouth my mouth get's bigger. Interesting :mrgreen:

It must needs be that the muscles are increasing in mass just as weight training increases muscle mass/bulking up.

so far the book is covering some history and stats but it is good reading.

It was true for me. My feet used to be a size 11. They're a size 12 now.
