Boy Scouts used to use PolarPur (elemental iodine) at Philmont for water purification - up to 20,000 Scouts per summer for many years. They changed to KATADYN Micropur tablets (chlorine dioxide) a couple of years ago. Both methods leave an after-taste, but the Micropur leaves less. According to some studies, the Micropur is a bit better in purification. One consideration is PolarPur is packaged in glass. Break that and you have an iodine cleanup to deal with. Micropur is about $.30 - $.50 per tablet (each does one liter).
