I just found the horizontal handles more obnoxious and always in the way,cut them off flush with a hacksaw and sanded down the ends.Now they are more comfortable and easier on the wrists.I can hold them like a ski pole and I'm not stressing my wrists by trying to hold them like a cane.I can get canes or probably even have one for that purpose.I don't think they were even made for hiking(even if they may say so).
