Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB Smart Phone

Postby zelph » Sun Nov 10, 2013 12:38 am

Couple weeks ago I made a [purchase online and got me a Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB Smart Phone http://www.cellularcountry.com/used-cel ... term=24186

The phone looks totally new. I purchased it to use it primarily as a mini Ipad. It does'nt have a sim card, came with ear pods and usb cord but no charger :(

Been testing it for the last 2 days and got everything on it to work. I don't have phone service whick is something I didn't plan on having . Just wanted wifi and gps features. Camera/video works great.

So, the unit works fine without having a service provider and sim card. I can do emails, surf the web, post in forums take photos/videos and use the gps. Just thought I'd let you know how I use it without the phone service. No monthly service charge.

I can make emergency 911 calls with if necessary.

I got mine at "daily deals.com"

I'm guessing that all those wifi functions are only available to you if you are near your router or at a free wifi provider location or can you sign up for Internet service without the phone service? And will the wifi work anywhere?

I'm still in the learning stages of this hand held wonder  Such a small package and has so many abilities.

My daughter and grand children came over yesterday and were able to teach me a lot about the ins and outs of it. My 11 year old granddaughter knew the most because her dad has an iphone. We had fun doing photos and videos. I'll test the wifi abilities more today and also the gps feature.

Well the gps only works with a wifi connection. Got to see if it can be hacked. or accessed in a legal round-about way. ;)

cell phones are dependent on cell towers to make them work as I found out this year at Heuston Woods State Park in Ohio. Where I camped was out of range to get a signal to use my cell phone. It was interesting to see a working pay phone hanging on the outside wall of the cinder block necessities building :D

I was thinking about getting a kindle fire with free 4G on it. I don't think the camera is as nice as the apple though.

I had been doing some thinking/researching on a small device for internet only. The Blackbeery was strong on my list because of price. I wanted to be thrifty as possible. don't want the monthly bills to go up. My wife and I have cell phone coverage on my daughters cell package for family.

To use GPS effectively you need an app with offline maps. You need enough memory to download maps when on WiFi then can use them offline. I use the Copilot app on Android. I believe there is a free version for iPhone available on iTunes as well. Its not perfect but the price is right. Worth a try I think. Can load single states or all of north america.

Yes, the price is right...thank you. I'll get a copy when I'm able to get on wifi.

When my daughter was here visiting she was able to get my unit connected to my home wifi but she was not sure how she did it. She was doing a lot of guess work, pushing buttons and wound up accessing the wifi. Once she left and I was finished surfing and shut of the iphone my connection was lost.

Setting up wifi is a good thing to know how to do. You will need to do this on the road whenever you want to log in to a new wifi access point. Once your connection is setup once, it should be remembered by your phone. The first thing to check is that wifi is turned on your phone.

Here is a link that may be helpful in learning how to setup your iphone...

The network name and password for your home wifi router can sometimes be found on a sticker on your wifi/router if you don't happen to have them memorized.

Good luck ...
