You can also find it occasionally in thrift store chafing burners.

jeeze! why didn't i think of it. i have a chafing burner that has a different product in it. it's called "Rock Wool" or "Mineral Wool". it is also very dense but doesn't fluff up like the ceramic fiber does. it is nearly as heat resistant as the ceramic.

Your mention of rock wool reminded me that I had read about that material but where?
It may have been this article on an emergency pocket stove over at Instructables.
BTW, I found the Instructables site maybe a year ago and was hooked on it for a brief period. Lots of interesting stuff.
