Grosgrain... pronounced "grow-grain" is ribbon material (nylon, polyester, rayon etc...) often used around hems of tarps (backpacker use) or for pretty decorative touches (girlie type stuff).

Grosgrain is an edge binding that is cut "across" the grain of the fabric, the threads run at 45 degrees instead of 90, making it stretchy so that it can be turned around curves. It is also known as "bias tape".

I's say grosgrain is used to finish an edge, and binding tape to reinforce it.
