One question..what's the width of the fish scaler?..or the maximum width you can bend?Someday I may need to make a taller one,if it'll do it.
If you thread the aluminum sheeting straight up the backside, it looks like about 4 3/4 inches would be the maximum width.

RR, is hard to get a deep impression in the aluminum becuse of the pressure on the trough causes to much resistance???
Naw baby naw, you can torque it down as much as you can unless one has "girlyman" hand grip. Of course, the thickness of your stock will determine the amount of impression.

I found a piece of scrap aluminum flashing. The crimp is not that deep but the rigidiy is all you need.

Good find there Knotty. That would probably do the same thing. I don't know if aluminum flashing would go thru it very easily but just a slight consistant floot makes a big difference.

I tried it, hard as all get out to get the aluminum to go through straight. Plastic bends when you squeeze it to get a good deep crimp.

I wondered about the plastic. It is only as good as it's weakest link !

Here is a comparison on the crimps of a fiskars and my DIY crimper.

The aluminum is from a serving platter from the dollar store. I really need to drill out the piveting pins on both townsend fish scalers and put the two sides with the rollers together and re-rivet. ;)

How much harder is it to use on vs. the other?

The fish scaler makes the deeper crimp but the papers crimp might be all you really need.
