Sterno jelled alcohol in a canister

Post by zelph » Fri Jul 11, 2008 6:10 pm

Wouldn't it be nice if Sterno came out with gelled alcohol in a canister like this one, just ooze out a gob on an aluminum based pot stand and away you go :D

Actually, if I remember correctly (doubtful considering my age), cans of gelled stove fuel were available in the 50's and 60's in England. Probably based on methylated spirits.

Here is a link to a site that discusses making gelled alcohol. I don't know if this will burn hot enough though.

i have two different cans of gelled alcohol fuel here. one is an old can that i picked up at a garage sale, the label says it "contains methyl alcohol".
the other is a brand new can from Canadian Tire called "Ecoflame" and says it is made from "Natural Sugar Cane Alcohol".

i haven't played around with them very much but they don't seem to put out much heat.

Possibly the type of thing they use at buffets to keep large dishes food warm without burning?

I tested a can of sterno once and I think I was able to boil 2 cups of water 3.5 times. Can't remember how many ounces in the can. I determined it wasn't worth it for backpacking but it was ok for inside my tent(big camping tent) :D Safe fuel. Then along came the StarLyte that held 1 oz. and was spill proof. :D
