Okay..I wanted something simple, sturdy, easy to put together, not too big,not too small, and work well..it does!I picked up a couple respirator cartridges which just happened to fit a standard canned vegetable steel can like a glove.
The pictures attached are pretty self explanitory as how to make it with one of the #56 cartridges(bought in pairs!),cut the can just below the rings where the black tape is in the picture and just shove it in there!I didn't even JB weld it but it could/should be(just a little leak is all).I took one coat hanger, cut three lengths of wire about 8" and use the pot itself to mark the size of the potstand...making a backbend to set it in the predrilled holes.
It needs about an ounce of alcohol to get going, pour it in,roll the thing around, even upside down to spead the fuel, and light it upside down.
Boils 16oz of water in about 8 minutes in a heinie can and an EV pot in about 6minutes after the flame gets going somewhat(takes a little bit but the flame spreads better with the pot on it.Without the pot,the flame is about 6-8" high.Without the controller(below),the flames just barely wrap beyond the bottom of a 6" pot
For boiling in a hein can..I added a flame controller of a hein top with holes around the perimeter that rests on the potstand and hangs about a 1/4" off the stove all the way around. That helped a lot.
The outside steel looks good(I haven't done anything to it!),it fits in the flame controller and would fit totally in a hein pot with a couple rings taken off the pot.Maximum diameter of the top edge of the cartridge is 3".The height of the stove with the potstand is 2-1/2".The stove portion itself is 1-1/4".Weight is 55 grams.
I tried 1-1/2 ounces of alcohol and it burned for over 15 minutes.I imaigne the capacity could be 2 to 2-1/2 ounces.
The inner cartridge is some kind of fiberglass or something that appears to be rolled around in there, about 1" high and it doesn't show any sign at all of damage after burning a half hour.I think I found the stove I've been searching for!
Thanks Zelph(and the rest for other ideas) for coming up with the starlyte which is the inspiration of what I really needed to look for in a style of stove for my purposes!
I'll get some more pictures up..dang batteries are all dead and charging.
