New "lighter"
Re: New "lighter"
I may have to try one now that I know what they look like. It would be cool to make one out of titanium. Or even out of rifle round brass. It would look like a cartridge except the upper half would slide off revealing the wick and flint wheel. A few 50 cal ones would be great gifts.
Even a bad day on the mountain is better than a good day at the office.

Someone is making a titanium version, not sure where they are getting such a small striker from. Another guy had a good idea. He has two of the cylinders connected together. One is the waterproof lighter, the other is also waterproof but contains some form of tinder. Don't see how you could go wrong with that setup.Bfinnigan wrote:I may have to try one now that I know what they look like. It would be cool to make one out of titanium. Your shell casing idea could make it into a diy project for the masses if it didn't require too much machining.
There is something out there already that is a match type design. You unscrew it from it's container and it works like striking a match except it's a metal tube with wick.

They are very cheap knockoffs, nowhere near the quality of the stainless versions. Had to buy 10 to get $1.55 per.zelph wrote:

Can't you take the ring off and just put them in your ammo belt?If the bear is charging..don't grab the wrong one though...

Zelph, are those flint lighters? Do you have some close up pics? I love seeing the gadgets, it feeds my sickness.

I'm going to test all the strikers when I get them. A couple reviewers mentioned running the striker backwards first to make a groove so it strikes easier and another had to tighten one up cause it would slip out. Not a big deal to take care of.Ridgerunner wrote:Thanks Sudden, I picked up a few for stocking stuffers

Re: New "lighter"
WOW, they finally arrived! I ordered these lighters Dec. 17 and they made it here on Feb. 12th. They were shipped on Dec. 18th. I think they must have put them on the back of a MuskOxen and then used a raft to cross the Pacific and then hired a distant relative of a Pony Express Carrier to get them across the country to my post office
