That's a great idea with the router. I have a nice router table that's gone unused for too long. Agreed on the not stressing the adhesive. Thanks for the help.zelph wrote:IIt would be nice if you could score the pad with a router that had a "V" cutter in it to relive the pressure at the scores when bent. 1/4" deep or so.
I'm sure a lot of backpackers would "plan" their meals and water purification around the solar cooker. When you have it "in hand" it's like having money in the bank.![]()
After it's attached, Slit the mylar space blanket to coincide with score lines so it flexes when bent, no stress on the adhesiveApply grommets where the cord attaches to the 2 points that hold the cooker to it's arched shape.

Re: Solar cooker
..and I wondered what I was going to use that roll of self-stick aluminum 2" wide tape for that I scored at a thrift store for $2...

To bend cardboard..I use a window screen spline roller..should work for putting creases at seams/bends on the Windshield foil/foam covers...
and I know I have at least one 25' roll fo 12" wide silver metal flashing..that should work..when I get time..

Churro, look what someone went and did for backpacking

I have had my eye on that for years. They are kind of expensive, though, and at "only 22 pounds" it's a little surprising they are marketing it for backpacking. Still, folks who have one love it, and it does appear to be built to last. Definitely more stable and efficient than my panel cooker. Probably worth the money, assuming you HAVE the money to spend...I think they make a double-wide version, too, which is what I'd want.

I think they backpack with lama's to carry the heavier stuff

Re: Solar cooker
I mentioned a "backcountry oven" before. I just looked it up and found that it's actually called an "outback oven". I got one years ago when I lived in a house with no stove in the kitchen. I did all my cooking on a plug in countertop double-burner range, and did all my baking in the outback oven. Here's a link: http://www.backpackerspantry.com/produc ... -sets.html
I used it a lot while camping, too. It sure impressed some hunting buddies when I whipped up a couple of pizzas one evening. Another time I made a calzone stuffed with some freeze-dried stroganof, making a huge meal for 2 out of one freeze-dried meal for one.
Somewhere along the line, I lost the pan that came with it, so I transferred the knob (which has a simple thermometer built in) to my msr blacklight cookset, which works nicely with either the outback oven or the solar oven. The thermometer makes it really easy to estimate cooking times in the solar oven.
It's a nice, sunny day, no wind and not too cold, and it looks to stay that way for a couple of days, so I might bust out the solar cooker and try to get some pics soon.

A few years ago I got my wife a Volcano Stove. A year later I got an oven cover for it. It was a dual purpose cover....I like dual purpose
The dual use was for her "Dutch Oven" which we use a lot when car camping and RV'ing
Here is the cover that looks somewhat like the cover you use for the Backcountry Baker

Nice weather here in the Midwest also. I was in my greenhouse working on Fancee Feest stoves. It was almost too warm inside, was wearing as t-shirt it was so nice

Re: Solar cooker
I found this video recently, then found some aluminum tape left over from making my solar cooker, so I tried making one. It holds water well, folds easily and seems to be surviving repeated fold/deploy cycles. It even pours well because of the way it is folded. I haven't tried it on a stove, yet, but it might require a little more support than a normal stove-stand provides. In the video, he uses non-stick foil, though I just used regular foil.
The fact that the inventor of the fun-panel is an origami master had me thinking of other shapes that can be made by folding, as well as what materials could be folded to make them. Non-stick foil laminated onto a "framework" of foil tape and folded into the fun panel shape might just be a small, light, durable, compact little solar oven. I think I will try it.

Re: Solar cooker
Origami is cool!
The pot looks ok for 1 cup of water. 2 cups might become a disaster when trying to remove it from a stove. I think the video showed 1 cup being boiled and poured.
There probably is a nice origami folded umbrella design out there that might work for a solar cooker. Parabolic origami
I'll google it.
