It's that tool that lumberjacks used to mark and inventory wood with. Saw one in St. Croix this last summer at lumberjack days! It just occurred to me!! I had to take my kid to the festival. I complained for hours over the drive across the bridge! Nightmare. Looks like it just paid off! :D

If it's not a tool for marking lumber or phone poles, my guess is that it is used to date or number whiskey barrels.

The marking tool, is it for cut lumber as it comes off the log????? Or maybe it's for marking "board feet" I dunno :shock:
